Canouan, an island in the Grenadines, until recently was largely untouched by the hand of commercialism. A tropical island with pristine beaches and a delightful climate, Canouan was only developed for tourism in recent years. The island now attracts a steady influx of tourists yearly, and tourism has become a primary industry.

Canouan has been inhabited for many centuries and has experienced a tumultuous history. Originally populated by natives with a very rudimentary lifestyle, the island later became the home of the Arawaks who possessed plants and animals, knowledge of the use of fire and simple fishing and farming skills. The Arawaks were in turn subjugated by the ferocious Caribs who managed to defend the island from European settlement for many years. Later they joined forces with escaped African slaves and the mixed descendants proved a fearsome opponent to the Europeans. However in subsequent years they allowed the Europeans to build settlements on the island.

Whale watching has in recent years become a favourite pastime for foreign visitors to the Caribbean. Marine life is plentiful in the area, with no less than 30 varieties of whales and dolphins to be seen. The most often spotted whales are the humpback and sperm whales. Sensational views of sperm whale mother-calf couples and mating behaviours of humpback whales are among the delights to be observed. Male humpbacks can be seen leaping above the water in magnificent displays. Females give birth to their calves and nurse them, a charming sight for the observer. Unique whale behaviour such as slapping the surface of the water with the tail or flipper can be clearly seen and heard, with a sound like a gun shot.

Visitors have the choice of selecting a whale watching expedition of their choice, with tours of varying durations available.

When selecting a Caribbean hotel there is no finer option than the Raffles Canouan. Delightful comforts and an array of facilities including an award winning golf course make it The Grenadines resort of choice.
