Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to plan out your entire route prior to backpacking in Europe. You will want to plan out some aspects of your backpacking Europe itinerary such as when you are going and how long you are going to stay. However, the joy of backpacking in Europe lies in the fact that you can pretty much hop on a train and go wherever you please with a minimal amount of planning.

The Basics of Planning a Backpacking Europe Itinerary

First and foremost, you need to make sure you have the right backpacking in Europe gear such as a money belt and a comfortable backpack. Bring clothes that are appropriate for the season you are traveling in. Some gear that is essential for backpackers is a rain jacket, flip flops, and traveling/hiking boots.

You will want to get an idea of how much you will need to spend when planning your backpacking in Europe itinerary. Look up the types of hostels that are within your budget range and research how much everything will cost in the regions you are traveling to. Eastern Europe is pretty cheap but some cities in Europe like London can be pretty expensive. Expect to spend at least $60 per day.

An important thing to remember when planning your backpacking in Europe itinerary is to be flexible. You may change your mind when you get there so try not to create a very rigid travel plan. Remember also that train and bus schedules do change so try to be flexible. If you try to stick too closely to a plan or schedule, you are bound to end up frustrated and disappointed.

Oftentimes when you backpack in Europe you end up meeting other travelers who tell you about an amazing place they visited that wasn't a part of your original backpacking in Europe itinerary. If you remain flexible, you can make these new destinations a part of your trip regardless. Keeping your schedule open to change is a big part of the adventure!

In order to create a rough and flexible backpacking in Europe itinerary, all you need to do is research rail pass prices, flight prices within Europe, flight prices from your home country to Europe, and then put them all together to make a plan. You can come up with different travel itineraries and keep them on hand while you are on your trip in case you want to change things up.

Believe me. Staying flexible is the key to making the most of your backpacking trip in Europe. While it's important to have some kind of a backpacking in Europe itinerary, being rigid will only make your trip stressful. Stay flexible because it's all part of the adventure!

Dubai presents itself as a tourist haven with many different options to spend your time. We recommend a few things to do and places to see to give your holiday the diversity that Dubai offers:

Rent-a-car in Dubai

1. The Gold Souk
There is a reason that Dubai is called the city of gold. With huge amounts of gold traded here, there are hundreds of shops selling jewellery. Even if you don't wish to buy, just walking through the souk itself is awesome experience. Make sure bargain until you get a good price, but bear in mind that the prices vary depending on the gold rate for that day.

2. Tour of the city
The "Big Bus Tour" gives a great overview of everything in Dubai over a couple of hours. You can book your tickets even before you get to Dubai, and hop on and off the bus at the various points. The ticket now includes a separate tour which drives you to see the various hotels and the construction that is going on. The guides are very knowledgeable, and with your ticket valid for 24 hours, this could cover all tourist stuff in one go. For those into something a little different, the Wonderbus Tour drives across land, before going into the water, giving a whole different view of Dubai. Even more rock star, if you have the cash, would be to take a helicoptor tour

3. Desert Safari
Go dune bashing through the wadis of the desert, which can be alikened to the thrill of a rollercoaster. At some points you really feel as if the 4X4 that you are in going to crash over the dunes. Tours usually include the opportunity to sand surf down a large hill, watch the sunset from the camp, and have a traditional Bedouin style dinner by moonlight, often accompanied by a nubile belly danced. It's probably enough to go for the evening, but many do the full day trip, as well as camp overnight in the tents. We recommend using Arabian Adventures.

4. Indoor Skiing
The very fact that you are in the desert and are skiing could seem a contradiction, but that is the lure to the whole experience that is Ski Dubai. With prices covering the rental of all equipment and clothing, you just need to bring yourself along.

5. Splash out on Shopping
Dubai is a shopaholics paradise, with local and international brands on offer, and sometimes at heavily discounted prices. Pick your mall depending on what you are looking for, but be sure to check out the Mall of the Emirates at least once during your trip, just for its huge size.

6. The Old Town
Bastakia represents what parts of Dubai used to be like with numerous Wind towers, a primitive air conditioning system. The area is small but is as close as you will get to a heritage area, which is a world apart from the "New Dubai" springing up not so far away.

7. Go Boating
Avoid the traffic and cross the creek using an abra, one of the small wooden boats. It costs next to nothing (50 fils) and can be included as part of your adventures through the city.

8. Burj-al-Arab
They say that whatever looks golden is gold. Whatever your take on Burj-al-Arab, it is the current symbol of Dubai's extravagance. You'll have to pay a fee to get in but is redeemable against food or any purchase you make. We would recommend going for afternoon tea at sahn eddar, early evening, but if you have the money and you like seafood, try out Al Manara. Make sure you dress up - the hotel has a strict dress code - this is 7 star after all.

9. Madinat Souk
The Souk at Madinat Jumeirah gives you a real feel of Arabia, and although pricey, is worth meandering through over an afternoon. After shopping, it is possible to have dinner, perhaps at PaiThai, which you must take a boat through the waterways to reach, followed by dancing off your calories at the Trilogy nightclub.

10. Wild Wild Wadi
Always a hit with the kids, wild wadi is a great water park next to Jumeirah Beach Hotel. The park has the tallest and fastest free fall outside North America, the Jumeirah Sceirah, where you supposedly reach 80kph! For those less speed inclined, there is Juha's Journey where you can idle your way around a river. And of course, there are many in between rides and amusements.

The harvest festival of Ponggal may have begun as a farmers’ festival that originated in South India thousands of years ago, as a means of giving thanks for the bounties of the earth, but its core message of offering gratitude for all good things in life makes Ponggal relevant for the entire gamut of Tamil population today. While Ponggal typically isn’t celebrated in all its glory in the city, in rural areas and farms, Ponggal proper is a joyous four-day event that is embraced as a harbinger of hope and prosperity.

The first day, Bhogi, is celebrated on the last day of the Tamil month of Margazhi. On this day, homes are cleaned and decorated. It’s a case of “out with the old and in with the new”, with purchasing of new clothes and household items, and the burning of old and unusable things. Bhogi also honours Lord Indra, the God of clouds and rain, worshipped for the abundance of harvest.

The second day is the most important. It marks the first day of the auspicious month of Thai and is therefore called Thai Ponggal; the Ponggal dish is cooked exactly at the moment when the new month is born. This Ponggal day is also called Surya Ponggal as Surya, the Sun God, is honoured on this day for a bountiful harvest.

The third day is Maattu Ponggal, dedicated to the cattle that help farmers in a myriad ways. On this day, the cows and bulls are bathed and decorated with vermillion and garlands. Prayers are offered to them and they are given a well-deserved day of rest for their invaluable service.

The fourth day is called Kaanum Ponggal. With “Kaanum” meaning “to see”, this is a day of socializing, where family member – young and old – get together to share their joy and harvests. It’s also called Kanni Ponggal, after a practice in the old days when the young women of the village would come out dressed in their festive finery and have an opportunity to meet the village’s eligible young men.

If you've decided to go backpacking in Europe alone, you're probably a little nervous or curious about how you are going to meet other travelers. Backpacking in Europe alone can be a liberating and exciting experience but it can also get lonely if you don't try to put yourself out there a little bit. When planning your backpacking Europe itinerary, make sure you spend a decent amount of time in each city you visit so you have time to take organized tours and hang out in the hostels you stay in so you can get to know other travelers.

Hostels: The Lone Traveler's Lifeline

The great thing about backpacking Europe alone is that there are many other travelers doing the same thing and it is easy to meet them at the hostels you stay in. Backpacker's hostels are a great way to meet other people because there are communal rooms, kitchens, and dorms so you are constantly in contact with other travelers. On the other hand, staying in hotels as a lone traveler can make for a lonely trip because you will always be cooped up in your room alone when you are done with the day's activities. Staying in a hostel is fun because you can cook with your hostel mates and chat with them in the communal area or dorm.

When backpacking Europe alone, you can meet other travelers by taking part in the tours organized at the hostel. Many hostels in Europe organize free walking tours of the city. These tours are a great chance for you to have fun and interact with the hostel staff and guests. You can also sign up for organized tours arranged by travel agencies in order to meet fellow travelers. In addition, hostels often organize social events such as pub crawls and BBQs. Don't be afraid to join in!

Backpacking in Europe alone may seem intimidating initially but it really isn't once you get used to starting conversations with fellow hostel guests. Remember that a lot of the people staying at the hostel are probably in the same boat and feeling just as nervous as you are. The only way you are going to start meeting people and having a memorable trip is by chatting up your fellow hostel-goers.

Make no mistake about it. Backpacking in Europe alone can be just as fun as backpacking with your friends. You'll meet plenty of people on the road as long as you get up the guts to make conversation with the people you meet along the way. Don't forget to participate in organized activities. Buying a bottle of wine and starting a little party of your own is another great way to get to know your hostel mates. The moral of this story is: be open to meeting new people and they will be open to meeting you!
